A study conducted between 2001 and 2004 involving 4,800 women, found FGM/C prevalence is 38%. Types 1 and 3 were the most common types found among participants. The 2001–2004 study did not extensively discuss how FGM/C is tied with Kuwaiti identity or ethnicity. However it did state that women who engage with the practice typically possess ‘[…] strong norms on behaviour and morality imposed by tradition […]’.
There is no legislation which expressly deals with FGM/C but certain provisions of Kuwait’s Penal Code, Rights of the Child Law and the Domestic Violence Act can be read as addressing and prohibiting FGM/C.
