In the Maldives, the prevalence of female genital cutting (FGC) in women aged 15–49 is 12.9%. The data suggest that the practice of FGC has significantly reduced over the past 50 years. 37.5% of women in the 45–49 age cohort have undergone the procedure, compared to only 1% of women aged 15–19. There is little variation in the prevalence of FGC across the country. 83.1% of women aged 15–49 who have undergone FGC were cut before the age of five.
